Overview
The Instructional Skills Workshops (ISW) is an experiential instructional development program. It is a 30-year-old Canadian initiative. ISW is one of the most successful approaches to faculty development in postsecondary institutions. ISW is an intensive 24–30-hour training held over three days. ISW covers the basics of effective teaching and learning. It is based on a self-reflection and peer feedback model. Therefore, the workshop time increases as the number of participants increases. Given the unique nature and structure of ISW, the ideal number of participants is three to four in each workshop.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants are expected to
- Increase awareness of self as an instructor
- Work closely with peers to enhance each other’s teaching skills
- Practice various teaching strategies and techniques
- Recognize the inherent opportunities and challenges of participatory learning
- Experience the diversity of contemporary classrooms from a student perspective
Audience
This workshop welcomes the following professional:
- New and experienced instructors in post-seconday educational institutions
- Teaching Assistants in post-seconday educational institutions
- Fresh Ph.D. graduates seeking faculty positions in post-secondary educational institutions
- Pre-service teachers and individuals aiming to work as instructors in their areas of expertise
- Trainers and facilitators in government, business, tourism, health, and industry, among other enterprises

ISW is facilitated in-person
Program Timeline
ISW is a 24–30-hour training that is typically facilitated in three/four consecutive days during weekdays and/or weekends any dates throughout the year.
